Supermarket Sociopath

Yesterday I stood in line at the supermarket behind a woman who was practically shouting into her cell phone. The man in front of her unloaded his basket and the checkout clerk began scanning items as the woman argued with her son about what they were having for dinner. Apparently she lost the argument, because she suddenly left her basket and ran into the aisles. The man paid and stepped toward the exit. The clerk looked at me. I looked down at the woman’s cart, filled with groceries and said, “I think she went back for something.” We waited. I looked toward the aisles and noticed that there were two other people waiting behind me. We waited some more. “Maybe she’s on the phone with her son, again”, I said joking. The Clerk chuckled and motioned me forward, “You don’t have that many items, I’ll go ahead and ring you up.” I stepped forward and unloaded my basket. The clerk scanned several items and then I heard a female voice yell, “What in the hell are you doing.” I turned around to find that the woman had returned, holding a box of chicken dinosaurs. I stammered, “We didn’t know where you were...” The woman was fuming. She screamed, “I was next. I just had to get my son something for dinner.” I looked to the clerk for validation but he continued scanning my items, head down so he wouldn’t have to look at her. The woman continued yelling at me, “Whatever happened to common courtesy?” I quickly paid for my groceries and headed for the door. In the background I could hear the woman yelling at the checkout clerk, “Why did you let her cut in front of me, huh? I want to speak with the manager.”
